Control of external parasites in dogs and cats is a year around problem for the pets of Garner and the surrounding region. Not only are these parasites pests that can cause profound itching and allergic reactions but they also carry serious diseases that can lead to long term health problems for your pets.
Fleas are carriers of the most common type of tapeworm that affects household pets. When an animal grooms and swallows an adult flea they can become infested with a tapeworm larva that will then grow in their intestines, depriving them of nutrients and leading to gastrointestinal distress. In addition, large flea burdens can cause large amounts of blood loss over time. This is an especially serious problem for small pets, puppies and kittens who can become anemic from severe flea infestations.
The diseases carried by ticks are an even larger issue. Deer ticks are the carrier for Lyme disease, a serious bacterial infection that affects pets and humans alike. Acute symptoms of Lyme disease include lethargy, anorexia, fever, joint pain and rash. Long term consequences of Lyme disease include kidney failure and neurologic issues. Other tick species carry similar and equally dangerous bacterial diseases such as Ehrlichia, Anaplasma and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Many of these disease are endemic in the Triangle region and for that reason we strongly recommend year around prevention for your pets.
